Dates: 5/8 and 5/9
Mileage: 2.7 and 3.15
Notes: Ughhh... you know those runs where your brain is like: yes! Finally we have the time to go running, let's go! Let's do 5 miles! And your body is like: lol, no. My last couple runs were like that. A past version of me would probably have said fuck it, and kept going, but that was before I turned 30. So I cut them short and I'll live to fight another day.
Prompts inspired by my life, today:
1. New computer means I'm doing things like googling "where is the home key on a mac" so... grumbly older player/coach learning new technology? With or without help?
2. Tell me what new players, pairing, whatever Worlds has got you excited about
3. it rained in southern california, and accordingly, everyone freaked out. So: player dealing with the climate in his non-native habitat. A SW transplant to the north? A Canadian dealing with Floridian winters? A Russian thinking we all have it easy?

Date: 2015-05-10 06:16 pm (UTC)From an RPF perspective, team Canada is fantastic. Crosby/Giroux is great, of course: I'm a big fan of "grudgingly realizing how well they play together and the other is not a complete bastard and accidentally becoming friends", but I'll take all kinds of fic. I love reading about all the younger players hero-worshipping Sid, Mackinnon takes it to extremes but others too. I also love that Worlds is full of "Jagr's boys", Giroux and Seguin and Ekblad and Hertl, and probably more.
I'm very invested in team Austria. A win in overtime against Switzerland, but a bad performance against France and an unfortunate OT loss against Latvia, so odds are high it'll be relegation again :( If they beat Germany, they still have a chance.
I really enjoyed the games with team Austria that I watched. Starkbaum is a great goalie, and I enjoyed watching Dominique Heinrich. He's tiny, but very determined and a very good defender. Unfortunately he plays for Salzburg in the EBEL :(

Date: 2015-05-10 10:37 pm (UTC)2. I know they haven't been playing together all that much, but Matty Duchene getting to hang out with his hero Sid makes me very happy because I know Matty is probably elated. I'm also secretly hoping for a Canada vs Russia match-up (like the Sid vs Geno World Juniors 10 years ago) even though it hurts me to see my faves on different teams...
3. It's not that Mo hates Toronto or anything, but it gets really, like, cold sometimes? The kind of cold that seeps deep into his bones and makes him sniffle the moment he steps out the door. It also doesn't help that the sun still shines like a floodlight through his drawn curtains, and tricks him into thinking it's t-shirt weather when it's really, really not.
Gards calls him a sissy whenever he complains about it though, and Mo spends just as much time defending his Canadian-ness as he does putting on all his different layers. It's not his fault B.C. chose to be perpetually rainy instead of, like, buried under snow 90% of the year. Also, Mo is pretty sure Minnesota is in America even if it's also really fucking cold, which makes Gards an American and his opinion invalid.
(Mo does get some shit from the boys about the Snuggie he packs on road trips but whatever, at least he's warm and toasty. Also, Phil started bringing his too so Mo is totally a trendsetter, fuck you very much, Loops.)

Date: 2015-05-11 01:00 am (UTC)New Jersey and New York weren’t like this last month.
He’s pretty sure hell isn’t like this. It is at least ten degrees – fuck, twenty degrees, because the US still uses the old system – warmer and immeasurably more humid than Tampere. In the short walk from the baggage claim out to the curb he already feels a sweat break out on his forehead and his shirt stick to his ribs.
The town car that picks him up from the airport and drops him at the team hotel in Fort Lauderdale is cool, at least. Sasha’s not really looking forward to doing his morning cardio routine in this weather.
(Fast forward five months. It’s weird to not have snow for the holidays, no pine trees or Yule logs, but the fireworks over the water remind him of the stuff his mom and dad used to set up each New Year’s Eve. And he’s just as happy to roll out of bed and not have to bundle into five layers or worry about shoveling or clearing off ice from his windshield before heading to the IceDen for morning skate. He laughs when Rasmus sends him pictures of the snow piled up on the balcony of his hotel room in Buffalo and sends back a shot of sunset over Pompano Beach, because that’s just the kind of
assholefriend he is.)no subject
Date: 2015-05-16 08:58 pm (UTC)Even Cam is laughing at him, you know you’ve reached a low point when even Cam is laughing at you. Marty just glares and pulls his coat tighter. It’s cold. And yes, Marty knows that 40 is hardly cold for New York, and yes he know it’s not even snowing yet, but Marty has spent the last fourteen years in Florida and it’s really cold for Florida. At some point during those fourteen years Marty had lost his thick winter skin, replaced it with a tan and now useless collection of flip-flops. He chalks it up to one of the many things he misses about Tampa.
When Marty first walked off the plane in Tampa he figured it would be the other way around. He thought he’d miss winter with it’s snow and deep cold bringing everyone a little closer. It turned out he got just enough of winter on the road trips to sate that feeling and now he’s wrapped up in extra layers while Dan comes out in just a sweatshirt, missing the subtle way seasons had moved in Florida. He got used to measuring time in inches of rain instead of by color. It’s always a little green in Tampa, not as eternal as people like to imagine, the coniferous forests in the northwest are far greener throughout the winter then the live oaks and towering cypress of the gulf coast but the ferns still spill out of their pots green and lush as ever and the grass only fades on lawns that aren’t properly watered. Marty wasn’t prepared for the way season explode into life in New York. Central Park was white when he arrived, covered in ice and snow, it’s trees strung with soft lights. He came home from Toronto one day in mid-April and it was all pastels, tiny pale leaves and a million spring flowers shouting the end of winter before melting into the dark green of summer. He watched fall set the trees on fire in vibrant reds and oranges and saw the winter descended in dark storms. Seasons are dramatic in NY, loud and attention grabbing, and Marty closes his jacket tighter against them.
